Forsyth Country Day School's Project Backpack

Project Backpack

“Giving Kids What They Left Behind”

Project Backpack started in Washington DC and other locations around the country to benefit school-age children displaced by Hurricane Katrina. By providing children with their own backpack filled with school supplies, we are hoping to give them a little piece of themselves back while also allowing them to get in a better place before starting in their new school.
What is the Project?
We are looking for new or used backpacks and totes that can be zipped shut. In addition, we need school supplies to put in them! Our service clubs will be calling local business for “in kind” donations that we can use, and we will also be looking for stores that will provide a discount to our families who wish to buy goods for donation. Here is tentative list of what to look for:
Suggestions to INCLUDE:

  • Note or card to child
  • Small toys, (new or clean)
  • Stuffed Animals
  • Playing cards
  • Magazines
  • Sports Bottles
  • Blow up balls/toys
  • A change of clothes
  • Notebooks
  • Paper
  • Notepads
  • Pens, pencils, crayons
  • Books (not heavy text books)
  • No need to purchase fancy items - take gently used things from your house

Please - DO NOT INCLUDE:

  • Food or drinks (including chewing gum, candy, etc.)
  • Sharp objects (non-safety scissors, pocket knives)

Once we start gathering goods, volunteers will be putting together backpacks for children who have relocated to North Carolina. Governor Easley has recently advised the state’s school system to enroll affected families immediately, so we are likely to see more families coming to our community and state. Students and faculty will be collecting all the goods and putting backpacks together, while parent volunteers locate families with children in need of school supplies. We are hoping to keep making backpacks every day during our tutorial period, so donate any time!
